Choosing Your Wedding Day Photographer

Choosing your wedding day photographer can be one of the biggest decisions in the whole planning process. My advice to brides is to research styles and previous work before making a final decision. Your wedding day will go by so fast and you will be so busy being whisked away for pictures, dances, cake cutting, visits with out of town guests and so much more. You may think now that you will have time to soak in all the details you have worked months on planning, but think again. There may be parts of your reception that you may not even remember seeing.

One important thing to keep in mind when researching is to find a photographer that will be thoughtful in capturing all the details you have spent months planning!!

We have designed and shipped custom orders from Atlanta to Australia and everywhere in between. Most of the time it is wrapped and shipped never to be seen again. It is always a treat when we can see our work especially when it is transformed into a spectacular work of art.
Ryan from Slate Studio had a specific color and texture in mind for his board. Once we perfected and it was given to okay by Ryan it was on the way from Atlanta to LA.
He had a very talented artist and designer, Annica, from Dirty Bandits fly from New York to LA to complete the perfect sign.
I think it turned out fabulous!!

Gorgeous Fall Floral Design

All I can say is "wow" when I look at the amazing floral design by Jackson Durham. Heath and his team make a huge space feel so intimate and warm. I love the simple but elegant hydrangeas on the farm tables and the huge rustic displays in the entry, on the outdoor table, and on the side table. I was excited to see that Heath incorporated our mirror into his design. It was such a pleasure to work with the Jackson Durham team.

Here is a little peek of what we have been working on lately at The Funky Shack. We have awesome new studio space in Senoia (right behind The Veranda). It is a perfect place to sit down with our brides and design a beautiful and fabulous wedding. One of our most popular and in high demand is our easel chalkboards. They are 100 percent handcrafted from reclaimed wood in our wood shop. Also, handcrafted are our corn hole sets which we rent with a large chalkboard for keeping score, a cutely displayed set of bean bags, and a little cafe table for bystanders. I want to give you a preview and a few quick facts about The Funky Shack's unique design and rental services. We take pride in knowing that most of our pieces are designed and created right here in our studio and wood shop. This gives our events a one of kind unique look! We are also able to design custom cake stands, chalkboards, wood centerpieces and so much more. Our other props, furniture and vintage pieces have all been hunted down and carefully chosen. We started out selling our unique items online and have shipped from Atlanta to Australia and everywhere in between. That just wasn't meeting our creative needs so we decided to introduce The Funky Shack locally and start renting and designing right in our home town. We are so excited to have had the honor to design and style for local brides this summer. We consider ourselves one of a kind in the wedding world because of our ability to create a custom wedding with originally designed pieces. The only way to describe The Funky Shack is "Wedding Design Brilliantly Redefined".

Amy and Chris's Portland Reception sneak peek

I had the extreme pleasure to design a quaint little reception for my brother in law Chris and his new bride Amy. Chris planned the most fabulous dinner at Portland City Grill, where he is also the sous chef. I traveled from Georgia to Oregon so I couldn't bring much with me. I brought the card holders and the bud vases of course. The florist in the building , Geranium Lake, had a wonderful selection of flowers and I was also able to rent the adorable tarnished silver vases!!! The flowers on the west coast are amazing and I had the best time with the centerpieces. These are just a few snapshots before the festivities. I often get asked "What exactly to you do?" and when I say "We specialize in handcrafted wedding decor and wedding design" I get a lot of "hmm"'s. It is hard to visualize exactly what we do without seeing our pieces or our inventory. So, here is a little bit of the studio. I am the marketing department, the office manager, and the packing department. Jennifer is the artist and creates everything wire that goes out the door which is an unbelievable task. We work together on wedding design, rentals and new product ideas. We have a carpenter, aka Dad, who makes all of our chalkboards and custom frames and Jennifer's husband makes wood centerpieces and farm tables. There is never a boring moment especially right now as the wedding season is in high gear!!! Thanks for visiting!

Intimate Reception on the Lake

We had a wonderful time hosting and designing an intimate wedding reception for out sister Tami. She and Ron got married in a private ceremony in December and then waited for the beautiful spring weather to celebrate their marriage. It was a gorgeous intimate gathering of friends and family. Small bud vases hanging with crystals, wooden elegant centerpieces, rustic chalkboards and lots of flowers added the perfect touch of romance. We were lucky to have Hillary with Fearless Photography come all the way out to the middle on nowhere Alabama to capture the memories for us!!

DIY Table Numbers

This table number is so charming propped up on a vintage candlestick holder. This particular piece of wood came from my sister's old farmhouse and has the original paint underneath the number. Even the least crafty person can recreate this look. Any salvaged wood scrap will do! This is a great project for brides who are going green with their wedding design.

I suggest 5 or 6 inch squares. The first thing you need to do is paint them with a light coat of paint. A light color works best underneath. Make sure to let it dry thoroughly. After the paint drys you can freehand or stencil a number with a darker color coordinating paint. When the number is dry use a piece of coase grit sandpaper to distress the wood. This absolutely gorgeous farm table is one of a kind. It is made from reclaimed 180 year+ heart pine. We salvaged this wood from our old farm house that we lost in a fire. The natural wood with original nail holes and the white chippy boards make a beautiful statement. It can be used in a more rustic setting or in an everyday dining area.

Now I am really having fun!! I just started making these adorable fabric flowers. I love how the different texture and color of all the fabrics create a unique look for each bloom. This is one of my most favorite nights of the whole year. It is a night of great fellowship, a captivating speaker, and best of all chocolate is involved. My sister and I get to invite 6 ladies and set a beautiful table for them to sit and enjoy the evening with us. Every year our table scape is different from the year before. This year we used a beautiful candle and crystal centerpiece that was handcrafted by Jennifer's husband. It was just perfect surrounded by fresh greenery. A fabulous time was had by all.

Once upon a time, this is how our studio looked. Whimsically decorated for Christmas. I would be ashamed to show you the studio at this moment. We have been so incredibly busy that we are busting at the seems. We have a table full of chalkboard table numbers ready to go out and we have another table of wire table number holders and place holders ready to be packed up. In every corner we have our vintage finds stashed and stacked up ready to photograph. The floor right now has all kinds of random boxes scattered around, packing material, and pieces of wire. We never intend to be untidy, but we are always rushing and our time seems to just fly away.

In addition to our studio being a flat mess, our website and Etsy store have suffered a little bit as well. Like I said we are having growing rapidly pains. Despite all the chaos and mess, we are determined to get the orders out in time!!! We even take last minute rush orders and are able to get them there in the nick of time.

So as we grow , our website at times may need some attention and my blogs may be sporadic, but I assure you that is because we have the bride in mind and get the orders out first and sometimes it is a ton of orders.

Rustic Copper

We have a lot of requests for copper wire but because it is extremely pricey we aren't able to make an affordable holder with it. We have tried and tried to age wire to create that copper look. Finally we did it. This wire has been aged just right to create that antique copper color. How exciting!

Woodland + Whimsical = Enchanted

Had I known when I was a little girl that weddings would evolve and become an artistic display created by the bride and groom, my dreams would have been a lot different. Even 11 years ago when I got married weddings were just starting to creep outside of the box. I love that happy couples have the freedom to use their imagination and reach for their wildest dreams. After all, the day belongs to them.
We also enjoy that same freedom as designers. Combining and blending different themes and styles is what we do best. Our signature piece, the swirl place card holder, makes this rustic woodland centerpiece look so enchanted and the pop of color brings everything up a notch.
Be on the look out for our holiday photo shoot. If we have no bridal emergencies this week (meaning a bride has last minute needs and needs them stat), you should be seeing them this week. So, if your big event is in December come back and check it out!

A Perfect Pair

I apologize for my lack of blogging the past couple of weeks. We have had some growing rapidly pains. This is only a good thing even though it has completely exhausted us. Every day has had its own unique challenges and I won't even go there. The only thing that makes it possible every day is the relationship, both personal and business, between my sister and I. Thus the title of this post "A Perfect Pair." I feel lucky and will never take for granted the unconditional love and understanding that makes us reach for our dreams everyday. We are constantly moving forward and our dreams get bigger everyday. Just keep an eye on us to see what is coming next! By the way, the rustic picks are available in out Etsy store.

FUNKY FURNITURE

Sometimes I think that we are just nuts or have some crazy addiction to furniture. You would think it would be enough to spend all day in the studio. Nope!! Jennifer and I are always on the hunt for unique finds to turn into great little pieces for you home. Most Friday mornings we sneak out for a few minutes to scope out the local yard sales. This is our little break after a busy week in the studio. These are the pieces that I just finished and listed on Craigslist. I really love the little bench. It is the perfect size for kids. Outside of the Box

We always strive to go beyond the ordinary. So when we decided to start crafting chalkboards we wanted to make them a little different and make them a keepsake for the bride and groom. Well, we first chose to craft them from reclaimed wood and make each piece slightly different from the other. Because the wood is so beautiful, we wanted to make sure the happy couple could enjoy the frames forever. So, we decided to offer a set that includes the table number chalkboards, a chalkboard sign, and glass for them all so they may be used as frames. What a great way to display your favorite wedding photos!! The set are available now in our Etsy Store.

Awesome Find

So in our quest for the latest greatest treasures, we came across an old looking machine with lots of little parts at an estate sale. After a closer look, we noticed these beautiful cedar boxes. Of course looking for a bargain, we were able to get them for next to nothing. I will tell you we did not buy the machine and all the curious little pieces. It is totally normal for us to research any finds when we get home to see exactly what kind of treasures we have purchased. We quickly realized that for $35.00 we should have bought the machine and all the parts. It was an old letter press that is still worth a lot of money! We grabbed our purses and keys and jumped in the car and headed back to the estate sale. You probably know how this ends. Someone beat us to the punch!! Moral of the story "Research what you find with one hand on the unknown and the other on your Droid!!"

We really want to sell these great boxes to a collector, but they are just so darn cute we haven't gotten that far. I imagine them at a rustic vintage wedding as centerpieces with beautiful flowers peeking out.

I just wanted to share that little story. It's not often we get the privilege to go to an estate sales but next time we are going to be ready!!

New Burlap Bags

New!! Here we go again. We didn't want to limit ourselves to just reception decor. These burlap bags are great for aisle decor but of course can also be used for the reception. This size is 4x8, but we most definitely be glad to do custom orders. I just love the rustic wire handle. You could also hang a cute little tag off one of the whimsical swirls.
